The Lantern Festival in China 2019- know about China

The Lantern Festival, which is usually on the 15th day of the first lunar month, falls on March 2 this year. It is one of the most significant traditional festivals in China.

Solving lantern riddles, watching dragon and lion dances, and eating yuanxiao (sweet dumplings made of glutinous rice flour) are a few of the most popular activities across China during the Lantern Festival.


The full name of 'Lantern Riddles' are ' riddles written on lanterns'. Chinese Lantern Riddles People in the festival must guess the answer from a word , a poem or a phrase, guessing the riddles are as hard as fighting with a tiger, so that lantern riddles have another name - 'lantern tigers' .


Riddles are a great workout for the brain, but with Chinese lanterns the riddles also have a lot of history behind them. In ancient times, advisors to the emperor who had suggestions they thought wouldn’t go over very well gave them in vague riddles. So if the emperor hated the advice, they could say they meant something completely different! Other people liked the idea of riddles as a fun game and the popularity of riddles spread beyond the palace. It became a way for both riddle-makers and riddle-guessers to show off their knowledge. Some of these riddles were so tough that solving them was supposed to be harder than fighting a tiger, and the riddles on the lanterns were called “lantern tigers.”
